In March, members of the Billingshurst Emergency Assistance Team (BEAT) attended a meeting of the Billingshurst Lions Club to thank them for generously donating funding for 4 full responder kits over the past year.
BEAT are one of a growing number of Community Responder Schemes across the South East Coast Ambulance Service Trust (SECAmb) region responding to the people of Billingshurst and the surrounding villages. Community Responders are volunteers who are sent by SECAmb to life threatening emergencies such as collapse calls, breathing difficulties and chest pains. The aim of a responder is to provide treatment for patients whilst an ambulance is en route. Responders carry equipment to deal with these types of calls, including oxygen and a defibrillator, a device that could help start a heart that had stopped.
BEAT’s members rely on donations from local companies, organisations and individuals to fund their equipment. Paul Berry, Chairman of BEAT, says “We are very grateful to Billingshurst Lions Club, and all our other sponsors, who help us to provide this vital service to local people. Billingshurst Lions have shown great faith in the group by donating kits to us very early on, and as BEATs workload and members have increased over the months, so has the support from the Lions Club”.
Ken Johnson, Billingshurst Lions Club member, commented "the club felt this was an excellent local initiative and also a very necessary one considering the length of time it sometimes takes ambulances to reach our rural locality in an emergency. The Lions have been very pleased to donate a total of £8,000 to this worthwhile project".
Joe Marshall, Responder Network Lead for SECAMB said: “The support that BEAT has received from the Billingshurst Lions Club has been fantastic. BEAT are a very enthusiastic group who have managed to recruit a lot of new members recently and being able to purchase new equipment for their use has meant that they can help many more people in the village and surrounding area.”
Since BEAT was set up in February 2006, the team has attended over 100 calls including calls in Billingshurst, Wisborough Green, Loxwood, Slinfold, Five Oaks, Coolham and Adversane.
